A Pure Data patch that imitates the sound of rain...

"Before going any further lets also be mindful of what we are expecting this patch to achieve. Ask the question again "What is the nature of rain? What does it do?" According to the lyrics of certain shoegazing philosophies it's "Always falling on me", but that is quite unhelpful. Instead consider that it is nearly spherical particles of water of approximately 1-3mm in diameter moving at constant velocity impacting with materials unknown at a typical flux of 200 per second per meter squared. All raindrops have already attained terminal velocity, so there are no fast or slow ones. All raindrops are roughly the same size, a factor determined by their formation at precipitation under nominally uniform conditions, so there are no big or small raindrops to speak of. Finally raindrops are not "tear" shaped as is commonly held, they are in fact near perfect spheres. The factor which prevents rain being a uniform sound and gives rain its diverse range of pitches and impact noises is what it hits. Sometimes it falls on leaves, sometimes on the pavement, or on the tin roof, or into a puddle of rainwater."

I'm from Galicia, an autonomous community in northwest Spain. In Galicia rains a lot, so in Galician (the official language of Galicia) we have more that 70 words to designate different types of rain. Here you have an article (in Spanish) entitled «Los gallegos y sus 70 palabras para designar la lluvia» that talks about this peculiarity. [I found the article at Libro de Notas].

This recording was made in A Coruña, were I lived during ten years. This rain was recorded from a window at my parents house. The image is from Ourense, it was taken on a December night from my uncles' yard.

Frank Bry explains how to record thunderstorms: "Most of my thunder recordings are made with my Sanken CSS-5 microphone sitting right outside my front door. I sit in my kitchen with the recorder and a glass of single malt scotch and safely wait until the universe gives me a good one. I have an open field directly in front of my porch with the forest on one side and a huge open space that leads to the street on the other. Unless it’s really windy or raining heavy I get some very clean takes. On occasion there will be cars going by, birds, squirrels or people mowing their lawns and chainsawing. This is very rare but can be annoying and just part of life. The middle of the night is the best time here, it is very quiet… almost to quiet (spooky)."
